Overview
Pollen Robotics — acquired by Hugging Face in April 2025 — announced and opened pre-orders for Microduck on August 27, 2026. The 25 cm tall, sub-800g bipedal robot is designed as an open-source development platform for physical AI experimentation and reinforcement learning. Pre-order pricing is $399 (introductory, before taxes and shipping), with deliveries targeted before Christmas 2026 in North America, Europe, and the UK.
How It Differs from Reachy Mini
Microduck follows the Reachy Mini desktop robot launched last year by Hugging Face and Pollen. Where Reachy Mini was stationary and built around human-robot communication, Microduck focuses on motion — bipedal locomotion, balance recovery, and physical interaction with the environment. Both products remain in the lineup as complementary platforms targeting different use cases.
Hardware
- Processor: Rockchip RK3566 — quad-core Arm Cortex-A55 + Mali GPU + AI accelerator
- RAM: 1 GB
- Storage: 32 GB
- Motors: 15 servo motors distributed across legs, head, and neck
- Camera: Front-facing wide-angle camera
- Depth Sensor: 8×8 Time-of-Flight LiDAR matrix
- IMU: 2× inertial measurement units — one in the body, one in the head at “eye” position
- Audio: Microphone + speaker
- Wireless: Wi-Fi + Bluetooth + dual NFC antennas (head and beak)
- Battery: 2,600 mAh — approximately 1 hour runtime
- Weight: ~780 grams
- Color Options: Cream, Graphite, Lavender, Sky Blue
What Can It Do?
- Walk, sit, crouch
- Recover from many common falls unassisted
- Roller-skate (!)
- Pick up and carry small objects using its articulated beak
- Trigger pre-learned moves when NFC-tagged objects come close
- Follow a laser dot out of the box
Seven pre-trained moves ship at launch; no code required for initial play with a gamepad.
Software & Development Stack
The full software stack is open source:
- Robot SDK and control software: Written in Rust, published on GitHub
- Control loop: Runs at 50 Hz covering 15 servos, radios, camera, depth sensor, and update engine on the RK3566
- RL training tools: Separate Python repository with MuJoCo simulator + ONNX policy support
- Fully offline: The entire stack runs locally on the RK3566 — no internet required. Optionally connects to Hugging Face’s servers to train, store, and share policies with the community
- Unique audio identity: Each robot generates a permanent, unique audio identity on first startup
Intellectual Lineage
Microduck has a direct open-source predecessor: Open Duck Mini (~42 cm, DIY), created by Pollen Robotics engineer Antoine Pirrone and sponsored by Hugging Face. The public project includes CAD files, a parts list, Raspberry Pi runtime, MuJoCo training tools, and ONNX policies. Microduck reflects a commercial evolution of this open research effort.
